The Naruto whirlpools peak around tide changes. Check the tide table and plan the headland section of the Coastal Circuit within ±90 minutes of peak for the full show.
NE winds build after lunch along the coast. Ride the exposed headlands in the morning and route home along the sheltered Yoshino river path.
JR Tokushima lines allow bagged bikes (rinko). Bag up at Tokushima Station and hop to Anan or Ikeda to shortcut the long valleys.
Tokushima has a great spread of shops — Dancing Dolls is 190 m from the station, and Nakanishi Cycle and Rindow Bicycle both speak English. Out of town, konbini staff can point you to the nearest bike-friendly garage — say "jitensha shūri".
City rental cycles live under Tokushima Station (Clement Plaza basement — cheap, no reservation, fine for the river path). For a proper road bike, the shops in this guide rent by the day; reserve a few days ahead in spring and autumn.
Ride on the left, single file. Lights on after dark, no umbrellas or phones in hand, and helmets are officially recommended for everyone. Sidewalks are only OK where signed — and slowly, pedestrians first.
110 Police · 119 Ambulance & Fire. Most station taxis will carry a bagged or wheels-off bike — show the driver: 自転車を積んでもらえますか? ("Can you take my bicycle?").
JR lines across Tokushima allow bikes in a rinko bag, free. Highway buses to Osaka/Kobe take bagged bikes in the luggage bay — handy escape hatch if weather turns on a long ride.
